“Marijuana, the Teenage Brain, and Teenage Driving Risks in Illinois”
The New Lenox Safe Community Coalition and its Motor Vehicle / Traffic Safety Task Group are pleased to announce a program entitled “Marijuana, the Teenage Brain, and Teenage Driving Risks in Illinois,” which will be presented via Zoom videoconference at 7:00pm on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. Dr. Dale O. Ritzel, health education professor emeritus at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and long-time director of its Safety Center will be the presenter (bio below).
This FREE program will include the following learning objectives:
This program is ideal for driver’s education instructors, parents with teen drivers and anyone that would like to learn more about this subject.

Dr. Dale O. Ritzel Bio (condensed)
Dale O. Ritzel, health education professor emeritus at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and long-time director of its Safety Center (he retired from the University in 2006) received the 2010 Kaywood Award from the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association for his sustained and substantial contributions to the field, profession, and association of driver and traffic safety education. In March 2011 and again in 2016, Ritzel received the Silvernale Award. The Silvernale Award is given by the Michigan Driver and Traffic Safety Association to recognize persons throughout the country who have made outstanding and significant contributions to traffic safety education. In 2013, Ritzel was inducted into the Illinois High School and College Driver Education Association Hall of Fame.
Over the course of his career, Ritzel has published 160 articles, received research grants totaling more than $20 million and overseen the graduate work of close to 100 students. Since his 2006 “retirement,” he has twice won the National Safety Council’s top research award. In 2005 Ritzel's paper, “Designing and Developing Web-based Courses for Safety and Health Programs,” received the 2nd best paper award from the American Society of Safety Engineers' Best of the Best papers in the Practice Specialties.
Ritzel has held numerous leadership positions within the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association, including several terms as its research division chair, vice chair and secretary. He is current co-editor of The Chronicle for Driver Education Professionals Online the official journal of the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association.
He also has served as president of the American Academy of Safety Education, an organization in which he holds fellow status. He was Vice President of the Educational Resources Division of the National Safety Council and was on the NSC Board of Directors for 14 years.
For years 2009-2011, Ritzel was President of the Illinois High School and College Driver Education Association and has been a member of the association for 56 years.

- Relate the use of marijuana by teenagers in Illinois and other states.
- Identify marijuana effects on the body, the teenager’s brain, and likely risks on teenage driving and use of marijuana.
