“One Fall Could Change It All”
In Support of Older Adults Falls Prevention
Since 2014, the Village of New Lenox and the New Lenox Safe Community Coalition, have held “One Fall Could Change It All,” in support of National Older Adults Falls Prevention Day. This event has typically featured informational tables, free health screenings, exercise demonstrations, keynote speakers and a free breakfast. However, with restrictions in place due to COVID-19, the event will be held virtually this year.
On Monday, September 21, 2020 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm, “One Fall Could Change It All” will be held via Zoom videoconference and will feature the following speakers:
Dr. Jalaal Shah, Oak Orthopedics, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with extensive training in hip, knee and shoulder disorders. Dr. Shah performs the latest procedures in orthopedics, including minimally invasive joint replacement, muscle-sparing anterior hip replacement, robotic hip and knee replacements, and complex revision him and knee replacement. He continues to enjoy treating patients of all ages with orthopedic injuries and conditions, including fractures and trauma as well as hand, foot and ankle needs. Dr. Shah will discuss how to prevent falls and how injuries can be treated if a fall does occur.
Amanda Mitchell, JointPro Physical Therapy, is a physical therapist assistant who will discuss the importance of balance and how having good balance can help prevent falls. During her presentation, participants will learn about fall risk factors, how to protect yourself if you start to fall, how to safely get up after a fall, and how to help someone who has fallen. Amanda has been a therapist for four years at JointPro in New Lenox where she works with patients who have a variety of needs, including: orthopedic, balance, and sports medicine.
Seamus Hughes, Walgreens Pharmacy, has been a pharmacist for four years. Seamus grew up in Frankfort and graduated from Lincoln-Way East High School in 2010. He completed PharmD at the University of Iowa in 2016 and then moved to Kansas City after graduation. As a retail pharmacist, he’s often the first contact for patients when they are having health / medication issues that could cause a fall and subsequent injury. One of the most common questions that he receives is “Will this make me dizzy / tired or interact with my other meds,” which is what Seamus will discuss during his presentation.
Participants will be provided with an opportunity to ask questions of the panelists, which will undoubtedly lead to additional information and takeaways from this event.
