The New Lenox Safe Community Coalition, in partnership with the Illinois Poison Center, is offering a FREE presentation entitled “What Everyone Should Know About Household and Substance Use Poisoning.” The presentation will be held on Monday, March 28, 2022 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm via Zoom. Poisoning is the leading cause of injury related death in the US—poisoning deaths exceed deaths from firearms and motor vehicle collisions combined! This presentation will outline the following:
- Common Pediatric Poisonings <5 years old
- Nontoxic/Minimally Toxic Substances
- Common Pediatric Poisonings >5 years old
- Real cases handled by the IL Poison Center
- Trending issues: fentanyl, vaping, huffing, social media challenges, dares
- Poison prevention
- Free public education resources for all Illinoisans
Presenter Bio: Amy Deitche, BSN, RN, CSPI, works as a toxicology nurse for the Illinois Poison Center (IPC), a department of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association (IHA). She has 25 years of nursing experience in critical care, trauma and pediatrics, with the last 15 years as a certified specialist in poison information (CSPI). Amy has contributed to several medical journals and given numerous presentations over the past several years.
Illinois Poison Center: The Illinois Poison Center (IPC) is a non-profit health service dedicated to reducing harm due to poisoning. The IPC’s free, confidential helpline, 1-800-222-1222, provides trusted information and treatment advice on potentially harmful substances. IPC medical experts include physicians, nurses and pharmacists. IPC offers free online education and Continuing Education Credit as well as free education/presentation/promotion material for caregivers, educators, healthcare professionals and public officials to educate the public on potentially harmful substances and poison prevention. The goal: create safer home, play, learning and work environments throughout IL.
